Apparently, we’ve been sharing our beds all wrong.
There’s a sleep trend that has been getting plenty of attention lately called the Scandinavian sleep method, sometimes referred to as the Swedish sleep method. And the idea is almost ridiculously simple:
One bed. Two people. Two separate comforters.
That’s it.
No separate bedrooms. No dramatic middle-of-the-night relocation to the sofa. You simply stop sharing the blanket.
And for anyone who has ever awakened at 2:00 a.m. wondering how their spouse managed to acquire 97% of a king-size comforter, the Scandinavians may be onto something.
😴 How Does Swedish Sleeping Work?
Instead of making the bed with one large comforter or duvet, each person gets an individual one.
You still share the same mattress, but everyone has their own little sleep cocoon.
One person can bundle up like they’re preparing for an Arctic expedition while the other sleeps with a lightweight blanket.
One person can toss and turn without taking the entire comforter along for the journey.
And perhaps most importantly, there is no tug-of-war over the covers.
Marriage saved. You’re welcome.
❤️ Why Are Couples Trying It?
Sleep preferences can be surprisingly personal.
One person sleeps hot. The other sleeps cold. One likes a heavy comforter tucked around them, while the other wants something lightweight. And then there are those sleepers who apparently spend the night rolling themselves into the bedding like a human burrito.
Using separate comforters allows each person to choose what feels comfortable without requiring their partner to compromise.
And while a separate comforter won’t solve every sleep problem, getting more comfortable and disturbing each other less certainly sounds appealing.
🏡 But How Do You Make the Bed?
This was my first question because, let’s face it, I still want the bedroom to look pretty.
Fortunately, two comforters don’t have to make your bed look like two twin beds pushed together.
You can fold each duvet neatly lengthwise and place them side by side. Add your regular pillows, decorative pillows or a throw across the foot of the bed, and the whole thing can still look polished and inviting.
If you’re preparing your home for listing photos or showings, however, I’d probably go back to one beautifully styled comforter temporarily. Buyers don’t need to spend their showing trying to solve the mystery of the two blankets. 😉
🛌 Your Bedroom Should Work for the Way You Actually Live
And that’s what I find interesting about trends like this.
We spend so much time thinking about how our homes look that sometimes we forget they’re supposed to make our everyday lives better.
Maybe that’s a giant kitchen because everyone gathers there.
Maybe it’s two home offices because both spouses work remotely.
Maybe it’s a multigenerational floor plan because parents or adult children are moving in.
Or maybe it’s simply two comforters because somebody in your household is a notorious blanket thief.
The best home isn’t necessarily the one that follows every design rule.
It’s the one that works for the people living in it.
So, what do you think?
Would you try the Swedish sleep method?
Or are you keeping your one comforter and prepared to defend your half of it every night? 😂
I use this method personally. While it hasn't saved my marriage it has surely added some happiness to it.
